Wu Through To Semi-final At Fourth Games

Published Fri 06 Aug 2021

Diving in the Olympic Games must feel like riding a bike for 29-year-old Melissa Wu, who today competed in her fourth Olympic Games.

At a height that would make most tremble in fear, the five-foot Australian looked comfortably at home 10 metres above the water on a concrete platform.

Through each of her five dives in the Women's 10m Platform preliminary, Wu put her experience and poise on show finishing fourth and moving through to Thursday's semi-final.

If the platform diver can repeat her preliminary effort in the semi-final, and remain in the top 12 athletes, she will move through to Thursday afternoon's final and compete for an elusive individual Olympic medal.

She already has one Olympic medal to her name, a silver from 2008, but that came in the Women's 10m Synchronised alongside partner Bree Cole.

At her first Olympic Games in Beijing, at just 16 years of age, Wu placed sixth in the Women's 10m Platform individual. In London she was fourth, and Rio she finished fifth.

If Wednesday is anything to go by, she is a great chance to finally score an individual podium finish.

"I'm pretty happy with everything. It was a really good way to start the competition," Wu said, "I just tried to take it one dive at a time and enjoy it out there and I'm glad I did that."

As for the fierce competition, Wu is taking it one step at a time.

"There's always tough competition, it's the Olympics so I think that's to be expected. For me just focusing on myself is the way to go," Wu said.

Joining Wu in the green and gold in the preliminary was Olympic debutant Nikita Hains.

The 20-year-old struggled to find her form early in her list finishing 21st after five dives, missing the cut for the semi-final.

"I'm happy with how I clawed back and kept fighting and fought to the end," Hains said, "I'm just so excited that I even became an Olympian just now.

"It's so surreal, it's something that I've been dreaming of my whole life. For that to just happen, I can't even put it into words."

"I'm still really young so there is still plenty left in the tank."

Wu will be back in action in the semi-final of the Women's 10m Platform at 11:00am AEST on Thursday.
