Melissa Wu has bounced back from a shaky semi-final to finish fifth in the women’s platform final at the World Aquatics Championships in Budapest.
25-year-old Wu, competing in her fifth World Championships, only just scraped into the final after finishing 11th in Tuesday’s semi-final, but showed her class with a strong finals performance in a field full of Olympic medallists and World champions.
In something of an upset, Malaysia’s Jun Hoong Cheong dived brilliantly to grab gold with 397.50 points, just ahead of Olympic silver medallist, Yajie Si of China, on 396 points, with Chinese Olympic gold medallist, Qian Ren, third.
Wu dived consistently throughout the final, sitting seventh after the opening round before moving to fifth with her third dive.
In further good news for Australia, James Connor is through to the final of the men’s 3-metre springboard, finishing eighth in the semi-finals.
Fellow Australian and 2016 Olympian, Kevin Chavez, missed out on qualifying for the semi-finals.
Thursday will see the final of the men’s 3-metre, and the preliminary and semi-final round of the same event for the women.
