WU FIGHTS HARD TO EARN CHANCE FOR WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP MEDAL

Australian diver Melissa Wu has qualified for the final of the women’s platform at the 2017 World Championships in Budapest, despite a few nervous moments.

The three-time Olympian was at her brilliant best for the preliminary round, qualifying second behind Olympic gold medallist Qian Ren of China, with Chinese Olympic silver medallist Yajie Si third.

She posted a score of 360.30, behind Ren’s 376.65.

But Wu, diving at her fifth World Championships, started slowly in the semi-final, sitting 17th after her opening dive and 13th after round two.

But a big third dive which scored 9.0 from all the judges lifted the 25-year-old to sixth place, and although her final two dives were not as strong, Wu finished in 11th place to earn a place in Wednesday night’s final.

Fellow Australian Taneka Kovchenko was 18th in the semi-final and missed the final.

Wu was back in action a short time later, competing in the new 3m/10m mixed event, where she teamed up with South Australian teenager, Matthew Carter.

The pair started strongly and were sitting fifth at the half-way stage of the competition, however a problem with their fourth dive dropped Wu and Carter back to 18th.

But they showed great character to finish strongly with their final two dives to grab 12th lace overall.

Wednesday will see the women’s platform final and the preliminary and semi-final rounds of the men’s 3-metre springboard.
