TODD MAKES IT BRONZE NUMBER THREE FOR AUSTRALIA

Two years after setting himself a goal of competing at this year’s World Junior Championships, South Australian diver Ross Todd is today celebrating winning a bronze medal.

Todd snuck into the 1-metre springboard final in Penza, Russia, in 12th position, but immediately put pressure on the rest of the field with a high-scoring opening dive.

Although he slipped back slightly over the next two dives, he was always in control, heading into the final round in fifth position.

He once again landed a solid dive, and then watched on as several divers ahead of him faltered.

“After watching the World Junior Championships in Adelaide two years ago, I set myself a goal to qualify for the next championship,” Todd said on the eve of this year’s event.

His bronze adds to the bronze medals won by Commonwealth Games athletes Georgia Sheehan and Maddison Keeney on the opening two days of competition.

In other results on Thursday, Todd’s South Australian teammate, Brodie Scalpens, showed he is a name to watch in the future by finishing 15th in qualifying for the 1-metre final.

Maddison Keeney and Lara Tarvit both had an outstanding qualifying round in the 3-metre, with Keeney qualifying second for the final and Tarvit fourth.

At the halfway stage of the final Tarvit was in the silver medal position and Keeney the bronze, but they couldn’t hold on, with Tarvit finishing fourth and Keeney fifth.
