KEENEY ADDS TO AUSTRALIAN MEDAL TALLY

Australia has won a second bronze medal at the FINA Junior Diving World Championships in Russia, with Perth teenager Maddison Keeney finishing third in the 1-metre springboard.

The bronze follows a silver and bronze Keeney won at this year’s Commonwealth Games and a World Cup gold in Madrid earlier in the year.

There were plenty of other encouraging results for Australia on day two of the Championships, with Queensland’s Naomi Gowlett qualifying third for the 1-metre final, where she finished eighth.

Victoria’s Anna-Rose Keating had an outstanding finish to her platform preliminary round, racing up the scoreboard to qualify in fifth position.

Keating finished 11th in a hotly-contested final.

And there was a solid performance from Brodie Scapens and Ross Todd in the boys 3-metre synchro final.

After a slow start, the boys put together some very strong dives to move as high as seventh on the leader board, eventually finishing in ninth position.

Keeney began her four dive final slowly, sitting in fourth after the first round, before rocketing to the top of the standings with her next two dives.

But a slight mistake on her final dive opened the door for the rest of the field, Keeney eventually finishing a very close third.

Australia opened the World Championships with a bronze medal for Queensland’s Georgia Sheehan in the B-group 1-metre springboard.
