SHEEHAN GETS AUSTRALIA OFF TO A MEDAL WINNING START

Queensland schoolgirl Georgia Sheehan has cemented her reputation as one of Australian diving’s stars of the future with a bronze medal on the opening day of competition at the World Junior Championships in Russia.

And in further great news, fellow Queenslander Jayah Mathews finished a close fourth in the same B-group final, the girls 1-metre, in Penza.

Sheehan was Australia’s youngest athlete at this year’s Commonwealth Games, celebrating her 15th birthday on the eve of the event.

But she belied her youth and inexperience to finish fourth in the 1-metre springboard final, just marginally missing a medal.

Her steely nerve was on display again in Penza on Tuesday, with an almost faultless display through the long qualification round and then the short 3-dive final.

Mathews was equally impressive, putting together a string of high-scoring dives in the morning completion, and then following up with another consistent display in the final.

In Tuesday’s other event, Victoria’s Josh Kehagias and WA’s Josh Ong performed strongly in the boy’s A-group 3-metre event.

Josh Kehagias finished qualification in the mid-teens, while Josh Ong was in the mid 20’s in a promising display for both divers.
