WORLD CHAMPION KEENEY FINISHES ON TOP IN 1-METRE SPRINGBOARD

World champion Maddison Keeney has held off a strong challenge from Commonwealth Games gold medallist, Esther Qin, to win the women’s 1-metre springboard at the Gold Coast 2018 trials on Saturday.

Keeney, who broke through for the biggest win of her career to win the 1-metre world title in Budapest earlier this year, finished on 573.60, with Qin second on 560.95.

Qin won the 3-metre gold medal at the Glasgow Commonwealth Games in 2014.

Georgia Sheehan, Australia’s youngest competitor in Glasgow, finished third on 532.95.

Keeney was in the box seat to win 1-metre gold in Glasgow, before an aborted dive cruelled her chances. Despite the penalty the Western Australian was able to score enough with her biggest divers to finish with the silver.

In other events on Saturday, James Connor and Kurtis Mathews posted 682.71 in the men’s 3-metre synchro, while Brodie Scapens and Sam Fricker scored 688.59 in the men’s platform synchro.

There was only one team competing in both events.
