World Aquatics Championships 2023, Day 2 Recap

Published Sat 15 Jul 2023

The first of the diving finals were staged on Saturday and there were three Aussies in action.

Georgia Sheehan finished ninth in the Women’s 1-Metre Springboard while Sam Fricker and Shixin Li placed 12th in the Men’s 3-Metre Synchronised Springboard.

Fricker and Li advanced to the final after yielding 348.06 points and 10th position in the morning’s preliminary session. Ultimately, the pairing finished 12th overall but improved their overall points score to 356.49.

The gold medal was won by China's Zongyuan Wang and Daoyl Long, with Italy winning silver and Great Britain bronze.

Competing in her third World Aquatics Championships 1-Metre Springboard Final, Georgia Sheehan finished ninth overall, with a total dive score of 256.75 points. It was an improvement on the 242.25 points that she posted in Friday’s preliminaries.

“I definitely lifted better than what I performed in the prelim,” Sheehan said.

“There were a couple of dives where I could have lifted slightly more but I’m just grateful to have the experience to dive at another World Championships Final,” she said.

The Commonwealth Games gold medalist will now turn her attention to the individual 3-Metre and Women’s 3-Metre Synchronised events, both of which offer quota positions (for their country) to the Paris 2024 Olympic Games.

To give herself the best chance of success, the 24-year-old will focus on process.

“There were a couple of girls today who probably didn’t have the result that they wanted. It just goes to show you can’t give up, you can always jump the ranks, you can always move down.

“It’s about sticking to your process and hopefully it gives you a good outcome,” Sheehan said.

China finished one-two on the podium with Shan Lin taking gold and Yajie Li silver. Mexico’s Aranza Vazquez Montano won bronze.

Sheehan is back in action on Monday in the preliminaries of the Women’s 3-Metre Synchronised Springboard while Shixin Li will dive for a medal in the Men’s 1-Metre Springboard from 3:30pm AEST Sunday, with Finals of all diving sessions available to view on 9Now.
