Published Fri 28 Oct 2016
Australia has enjoyed another solid day at the pool at the 2016 FINA Diving Grand Prix on the Gold Coast, with the highlight being the performance of former top-class gymnast, Declan Stacey.
Stacey joined 2014 Commonwealth Games diver, Georgia Sheehan, and Jayah Mathews in qualifying for Sunday’s finals in their respective events.
23-year-old Stacey has only been diving for less than one year, but has already made a good impression in the difficult platform competition.
Stacey, who won a gymnastics gold medal at the 2011 Commonwealth Youth Games, finished second in his platform semi-final and qualified fourth overall for Sunday’s final.
He’s getting a taste of the very best of competition, with current world record holder, Jian Yang, and fellow Chinese diver, Hao Yang, in Sunday’s final.
Jian Yang (482.90), who has twice set the record for the highest point score for a single dive, had his colours lowered by Hao Yang (504.20) in the semi-finals.
17-year-old Georgia Sheehan finished third in her 3-metre springboard semi-final with 256.40, while Jayah Mathews posted 233.50 to finish third in her semi.
Both divers have qualified for Sunday’s final.
Defending gold medallist, China’s Han Wang, qualified second for the final, with countrywoman Xiaohui Huang posting the highest score.
The finals of the women’s platform and the men’s springboard will be held on Saturday, along with the women’s platform synchro and the men’s 3-metre synchro.
