Shixin Li won his second medal of the 2024 World Aquatics Championships overnight, claiming silver in the Men’s 1-Metre Springboard.
The 35-year-old entered the final as one to watch after finishing the preliminaries in third position. In the final, Li’s overall score of 395.70 included a 71.40 for his inward 2 ½ somersault pike.
A world champion of this event in 2011, Li was nudged out of top position by Mexican diver Osmar Olvera Ibarra who won the gold with a total score of 431.75. Great Britain’s Ross Haslam was third.
Fellow Aussie Kurtis Matthews also advanced to the final and finished sixth overall in what was his first appearance at a World Aquatics Championships.
This was Li’s second medal of these Championships. On Day One, Li joined a quartet of Aussies who won bronze in the Mixed Team’s Event. Li will compete in the Men’s 3-Metre Springboard Preliminaries on Tuesday.
Looking ahead to Day Three, Aussies Melissa Wu and Nikita Hains will be in action in the preliminaries of the Women’s 10-Metre Platform while Mathews will partner with Sam Fricker in the Men’s 3-Metre Synchronised. Both are important events with an Olympic quota available to Australia in each event.
