Published Fri 26 Jul 2024

Australia’s Diving Team look to continue their success at the Olympic Games having won a medal at every Games since Sydney 2000. Australia’s Synchro teams will return to the biggest sporting stage, eight years after their last opportunity, as the diving team vies for Olympic glory.

Overview

Melissa Wu is set to make history as the first Australian diver to compete at five Olympic Games, as part of the nine member Australian Olympic Diving Team for Paris.

The Olympic bronze medalists Anabelle Smith and Maddi Keeney hope to return to the podium in their fourth, and second, Games respectively.

World Champion Cassiel Rousseau and Domonic Bedggood will both contest their second Olympic Games, while Jaxon Bowshire, Kurtis Mathews, Alysha Koloi and Ellie Cole will all make their debut.

Cassiel is aiming to build on a rich French-Australian Olympic legacy in Paris, with his late grandfather Michel Rousseau winning gold for France at the 1956 Melbourne Olympic Games in track cycling.

Melissa and Ellie, the oldest and youngest diving team members, will contest the 10m Individual, Maddi and Anabelle the 3m Synchro and Maddi and Alysha the 3m Individual.

On the men’s side, Cassiel will contest the 10m Individual and partner with Domonic in the 10m Synchro, Jaxon the 10m Individual, and Kurtis the 3m Individual.

The team boasts three Olympic medalists in Melissa, Maddi and Anabelle, with the team also winning multiple World Cup and World Championship medals since the Tokyo Games.

With 71 divers having already represented Australia at an Olympic Games, Melissa makes history as the first to make five Games, while Anabelle joins Jenny Donnet and Loudy Wiggins as four-time diving Olympians.

Ones to Watch

Australian

Cassiel will be one to watch, competing in both the Men’s 10m Platform, and Men’s 10m Synchronised with diving partner Domonic. Cassiel won an historic gold medal in the Men’s 10m Platform at the 2023 World Aquatics Championships, the first Australian to ever do so.

Olympic bronze medallists Anabelle and Maddison will head into the Women’s 3m Synchronised event as medal favourites, having won silver at the 2024 World Aquatics Championships.

Five-time Olympian Melissa will be hoping to add a third Olympic medal to her collection, having won silver at the Beijing 2008 Games (10m Synchronised) and bronze in Tokyo (10m Platform).

Alysha is the reigning world champion in the Women’s 1m Springboard, and will be looking to translate her form to the 3m Springboard event in Paris, where she will make her Olympic debut.

International

The Chinese Team are dominant forces in the diving world, and have won seven of the eight gold medals at the last three Olympic Games.

Great Britain's diving sensation Tom Daley will make his Olympic return in the Men’s 10m Platform, with new partner Noah Williams. The pair won silver at the 2024 World Aquatics Championships.

Sport Format

The synchronised events are straight finals, with eight teams having qualified in each of the respective events.

In the individual events, athletes will progress through preliminary and semi-final rounds before competing for their position on the Olympic podium in a 12-diver final. The Olympic Champion is the athlete with the highest score from only the final round of competition.

Australian divers will compete in six Olympic events in Paris, the Men’s 3m Springboard, Women’s 3m Springboard, Men’s 10m Platform, Women’s 10m Platform, Women’s 10m Synchronised and Men’s 10m.

Men compete six dives in both events, with women competing five dives.

The Women’s 3m Synchronised will be the first diving event of the Games, doubling also as one of the first medal events. Anabelle and Maddison will compete at the Aquatics Centre on 27 Saturday 27 July at 7pm AEST.

Australia’s divers will also compete in the Men’s 10m Synchronised event in week one of the Games, which will feature Cassiel and Domonic on 29 Monday July at 7pm AEST.
