Paris 2024 Olympics countdown begins with Australian Open Championships in Perth

Published Wed 24 May 2023

Australia’s best divers will begin the journey towards Olympic qualification when Perth hosts the Australian Open Championships at HBF Stadium from Wednesday 24 May to Sunday 28 May.

Tokyo 2020 Olympians Cassiel Rousseau, Shixin Li, Nikita Hains and Sam Fricker will be among the athletes aiming for national titles this week, doubling as the qualification event for the Australian diving team for the World Championships in Fukuoka, Japan, from 14-22 July.

The countdown to the Paris 2024 Olympic Games well and truly begins this week, with the upcoming World Championships in Japan also providing the first chance for nations to secure Olympic quota spots for Paris.

Diving Australia General Manager Performance Steve Foley says it adds to the excitement of this week’s national championships.

“We’re building towards Paris in only 14 months’ time, so with World Championships team selection on the line it adds an extra dimension to this week’s national championships,” Foley said.

“We anticipate some really strong competition this week, we’ll have emerging athletes trying to qualify for the national squad and established Olympic and Commonwealth Games athletes aiming to claim national titles and secure their spot on the World Championships team.

“About 50 Australian athletes will contest events but we’ve also invited athletes from New Zealand to compete, providing valuable international competition for our divers ahead of the World Championships in July. It’s a fantastic way to prepare our athletes for the exciting year ahead.”

Ten finals will be held at this week’s Australian Championships, from the 1m springboard to 10m platform, across women’s, men’s and synchronised competition.

The opening ceremony will take place at 2.45pm on Wednesday (AWST), with action across all days, and finals held on Wednesday, Thursday and Sunday. The competition can be livestreamed via the links below.

Competition will culminate with Diving Australia’s Annual Awards Night on Sunday, when the World Championship squad will be named.
