Oceania Championships 2023, Day 2 Recap

Published Fri 01 Dec 2023

The final day of the 2023 Oceania Championships was not short on entertainment with tight competition across both disciplines.

Four Australian divers competed against their New Zealand counterparts with the goal of securing quotas for their country to the Paris 2024 Olympic Games.

The hotly contested Women’s 3-Metre Springboard started the day with Georgia Sheehan and Brittany O’Brien taking on New Zealanders Elizabeth Roussel and Maggie Squire.

Following the preliminaries, only 0.5 of a point separated competitors Sheehan and Roussel.

Sheehan was able to take a clear lead in the final finishing in first place with a total of 318.00 with teammate O’Brien close behind in second place with 303.60.

“I felt more nervous for the prelim than the final. I think I needed to shake off a few jitters,” Sheehan said.

“Competition was quite tight, there was a very equal chance for all of the girls who dove today to take out the top spot, so I was definitely nervous going up against such strong competitors,” she said.

Sheehan who originally hails from Queensland said it was special to see her friends and family in the crowd while competing.

“I always love coming back to Brisbane, it’s always nice to be back in my home pool. I’m looking forward to extra support during World Championships trials next week,” she said.

Australian supporters were holding their breath during the competitive Men’s 10-Metre Platform event, with Jaxon Bowshire and Sam Fricker flying the Aussie flag.

Fricker continued his preliminary form into the final, eventually securing first place with 406.25, edging out fellow countryman Bowshire by less than a point, who ended the competition with 405.60.

“Really happy for Jackson, he performed some incredible dives and put up a great fight. It was reassuring to see he was going great during the competition to know Australia was in a good spot,” Fricker said.

“It was my first competition of the season and every competition when we come back from a training block can be a bit of a stab in the dark so to have had the performances we did today is great,” he said.

Australia was dominant throughout the 2023 Oceania Championships, winning each event and taking home a haul of 4 gold and 4 silver medals.
