OLYMPIANS EYE OFF FINAL SPOTS FOR RIO 2016 THIS WEEKEND
Olympic medalists Matthew Mitcham and Brittany Broben will be among divers looking to clinch final Rio 2016 spots for Australia at the Oceania Championships in Ringwood, Melbourne, this weekend.
Australia has already secured several quotas following a strong performance at this year’s World Championships, including both positions in the women’s 3-metre springboard.
With each country allowed two divers in every discipline, Australia needs to win the women’s platform, men’s platform and men’s 3-metre springboard this weekend to fill its quota.
Divers who qualified quotas at the World Championships are not eligible.
Mitcham is one of 10 Australians competing in the men’s 3-metre springboard, alongside two-time Commonwealth Games medalist, Grant Nel, and three New Zealand divers.
In the women’s platform, London silver medalist Brittany Broben will join a full field of 14 Australian divers, while US-based Victorian James Connor heads a seven-strong all-Australian field in the men’s platform.
The divers are competing to earn quotas for Australia, with the final make-up of the Australian team decided at next year’s Australian Championships and selection trials.
Australia has also qualified a 3-metre women’s synchro team for Rio, and will look to add a women’s platform and men’s 3-metre and platform synchro teams at next year’s World Cup in Rio.
