O'BRIEN SHOWS BEST FORM IN PLATFORM FINAL
Published Fri 15 Dec 2017
Rio Olympian Brittany O’Brien has finished on top in the women’s platform final at the diving trials for next year’s Gold Coast Commonwealth Games.
The NSW teenager was trailing Western Australia’s Teju Williamson after the preliminary round of competition, but lifted her performance in the final to finish with a total of 602.35, ahead of Williamson’s 575.50.
Australia’s number one platform diver, Melissa Wu, withdrew from the Gold Coast trials with a back injury, but has asked for special consideration from selectors in a bid to make her fourth Commonwealth Games team.
O’Brien was a late addition to the Rio team after London 2012 silver medallist, Brittany Broben, was forced to withdraw through injury.
Two-time Olympian James Connor held on to win the men’s 3-metre springboard, just holding out a challenge from Thursday’s 1-metre winner, Matthew Carter.
Connor finished on 868.70, just 5.15 points ahead of 17-year-old Carter on 863.55.
Saturday will see finals in the women’s 1-metre, and the men’s 10-metre synchronised and 3-metre synchronised.
