COMMONWEALTH DIVERS OF THE FUTURE GET CHANCE TO SHINE
Seven of Australia’s most promising divers have headed to Germany this week to compete in one of the world’s most prestigious youth diving competitions.
The trip to the Dresden International Youth Diving Competition has been partly funded by the generous support of the NextGEN AUSComGames Squad program, which aims to give promising Commonwealth Games athletes of the future valuable international experience.
Australia has a proud history in the Dresden International, the biggest event for young divers after the World Junior Championships.
Several of the Australian squad heading to Dresden this week competed in last year’s World Junior Championships in Russia, including South Australian Brodie Scapens, and Queensland’s Naomi Gowlett.
Gowlett was a silver medalist alongside Georgia Sheehan in the 3-metre synchro in Russia, while Scapens broke through to win springboard gold on the senior Australian Grand Prix circuit earlier this year.
Another of the Australian touring party, Matthew Carter, won a silver medal at last year’s Dresden International.
Also in the squad is promising Western Australian diver, Teju Williamson, a silver medalist in the platform competition at the Brisbane Grand Prix.
Another Western Australian, Tamara Irvine, has been entered in the 1-metre, 3-metre and the platform event in Dresden, while South Australian springboard specialist Ella Dungey will compete in the 1-metre and 3-metre.
Ruby Neave, who won the Victorian 1-metre title earlier this year, will compete in both springboard disciplines.
The Dresden International Youth Diving Competition will run from April 23 until April 26.
