National Volunteers Week | Bree Bryant
Published Thu 23 May 2024
This week marks National Volunteers Week, providing an opportunity to highlight the important role of volunteers in our community. Diving Australia is fortunate to have many skilled and experienced volunteers lending a helping hand, one of whom is Bree Bryant.
Beijing 2008 silver medallist, Briony ‘Bree’ Bryant (nee Cole) has been a regular volunteer at diving events across the country as a judge following her retirement from the sport in 2010. “In the last few years of my diving career I started judging at diving events,” said Bree.
“I am still judging and I find it a great way to be involved and to help out the sport, as events can’t run without volunteers.”
Bree shared volunteering played an important role in her transition from high performance athlete to a career post diving.
“The transition from elite athlete to 'regular person' is tricky, as you go from having so much structure and a team around you - to needing to be totally self reliant” she said.
“I found that setting new goals is important and I'm glad that I completed university whilst being an athlete, which gave me direction post retirement.”
“Moving away from high performance and competitions doesn’t have to be the end of your involvement with the sport, I’ve found volunteering has been a great way to stay connected.”
Along with regular volunteering, Bree is currently participating in The AIS Athlete Accelerate Program. The program provides a unique experience for retired female athletes who are pursuing career options in the sport sector.
“The AIS Athlete Accelerate Program has been amazing so far,” said Bree.
“It has been so nice to get to know the other 14 female former athletes, and the expertise from the AIS.
“We are learning practical skills and so far the networking opportunities have been excellent.”
Bree encourages everyone in the diving community to get involved, as volunteers are needed at every event to run successfully.
“Volunteering is such a great way to learn new skills and to meet new people - two great reasons to get involved!”
