Triple Diving Gold Medallist Melissa Wu to carry the Australian flag into Birmingham 2022 Closing Ceremony

Five-time Commonwealth Games diver, Melissa Wu has today been confirmed as Australia’s flag bearer for the Birmingham 2022 closing ceremony.

Wu boasts a career total of five medals – three of them gold and including gold in the 10m platform synchro in Birmingham with 14-year-old Charli Petrov.

But she could well add to that tally in today’s Mixed Synchro with Domonic Bedggood

Wu will lead an Australian contingent of 250 athletes and officials into Alexander Stadium this evening as the team celebrates one of its most successful games in history with the medal tally standing at 65 gold 54 silver and 53 bronze – a total of 172 before the final day.

Wu is the most experienced member of the Australian Diving Team, having begun her career as a 14 year old in Melbourne in 2006 and going on to contest Delhi in 2010, Glasgow in 2014, Gold Coast 2018 and a successful campaign here in Birmingham.

Wu’s influence as a leader and mentor on the Australian Diving Team, and the Australian Commonwealth Games Team as a whole, cannot be overstated.

At the Birmingham Games Wu partnered with rising star Petrov, the youngest member of the Australian Team, to claim that stunning gold in the Women’s 10-Metre Platform Synchronised event.

Diving Australian Chairman Mike Murphy congradualted Melissa on the honour.

"Melissa Wu is determination and resilience personified. She is the epitome of what, in my mind, an Australian athlete can be. Diving Australia wholeheartedly congratulates her on this prestigious and dare I say it, richly deserved honour," Murphy said.

"Melissa has been our own standard bearer for over 16 years. It is fitting she is now flying the Australian flag on behalf of all Australian athletes. We congratulate all Australian athletes and support staff that made the Birmingham Games so memorable."
