Meet the Team - Melissa Wu

Published Thu 15 Jul 2021

Melissa Wu jumped onto the world stage with her silver medal winning performance as a 13-year-old at the Melbourne 2006 Commonwealth Games.

Since then, Wu has secured medals at the Olympic Games, FINA World Championships, Commonwealth Games, and FINA Diving World Cup.

Now, Wu will dive into the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games with a wealth of experience and global esteem as one of the worlds premier Platform divers after securing her ticket at the recent 2021 Australian Open Championships incorporating Nomination Trials.

Her coach, Chava Sobrino, puts her success down to her unwavering commitment to perfection.

“Melissa is an inspiration for all and in every level, she strives for perfection and her attention to detail is one of her best attributes hence her entrepreneurial drive and her impeccable work ethic,” Sobrino said.

“At training Melissa is like having one more coach on the boards as she stops and helps her teammates all the time.

“As a competitor she is amazing so relaxed and a great performer.

“Melissa for sure is one of the most important assets in our New South Wales and Australian Teams.”

Just like in the diving pool, Wu is a trailblazer in the professional world where she runs three businesses and works as a coach for the New South Wales Institute of Sport helping to identify and develop the next generation of Australian divers.

Wu also spends her time studying towards a Bachelor of Exercise and Sports Science at Charles Darwin University.

In Tokyo, Wu will join a prestigious club of Australian divers to compete at four Olympic Games in the Green and Gold. The only other Australian athletes to do so are the legendary Jenny Donnet and Loudy Tourky.

However, for Wu these Games will feel like any other competition as she focuses on the process and one dive at a time.

Watch Melissa Wu compete at the 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games in the Women’s 10-Metre Platform Preliminary Wednesday August 4, 2021.
