Meet the Team - Esther Qin

Published Thu 08 Jul 2021

Esther Qin’s earliest Olympic memory was watching Chinese diver Tian Liang compete at the Sydney 2000 Olympic Games.

At the time Qin vowed that the sport was too scary, and she would never become a diver.

Little did she know, 21 years later she would be qualifying for her second Olympic Games in the very same pool that Liang secured his first Olympic gold.

The New South Welshman secured her position on the Tokyo 2020 Australian Olympic Team after a podium topping finish in the Women’s 3-Metre Springboard event at the 2021 Australian Open Championships incorporating Nomination Trials.

Qin’s coach, Chava Sobrino, said that it is through her incredible ambition and focus that she has come this far.

“Esther is a joy to coach, and she has an amazing drive and extremely disciplined, she never stops even if she is tired, injured, or not feeling well,” Sobrino said.

“Basically, nothing can stop her on her quest to achieve her goals. She is a very exiting diver to watch and possess one of the best hurdles in the world.

"Esther is a great example in and out the pool and as a competitor she is relaxed and focused but with an amazing desire to succeed.”

Qin emigrated to Australia in 2009 where she started diving in her new home country after a hiatus from the sport.

Since that time Qin has become a familiar face on Australian teams and on the international podium. Such success has brought her two Commonwealth Games gold medals in 2014 and 2018, and a FINA World Championships bronze in 2015.

Her prior Olympic experience from the Rio 2016 Olympic Games, where she finished sixth in the Women’s 3-Metre Final, will no doubt come in handy as she looks towards Tokyo and once again representing the Green and Gold.

Watch Esther Qin compete at the 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games in the Women’s 3-Metre Springboard Preliminary Friday July 30, 2021.
