Meet the Team - Cassiel Rousseau

Published Mon 05 Jul 2021

Last year Cassiel Rousseau fell off a skateboard and broke his wrist.

After three months out of the pool, and a slow recovery towards normal training, the Queenslander secured his position on the Australian Olympic Team with an outstanding performance at the 2021 Australian Open Championships incorporating Nomination Trials.

In his Olympic debut, Rousseau will compete in the Men’s 10-Metre Platform event. The event has seen Diving Australia alumni secure their name in the history books including Olympic Medallists Mathew Helm and Matthew Mitcham.

The 20-year-old comes from a family with Olympic history, with Rousseau’s grandfather representing France in cycling at the 1956 Melbourne Olympic Games.

However, at these Olympic Games, Rousseau will look to forge his own legacy alongside coach Adrian Hinchliffe.

“Cassiel’s fast and exciting transfer from Acrobatics has unearthed another fantastic addition to our National Diving Squad,” Hinchliffe said.

“Since his arrival he has managed to balance the right amount of smart training with his ‘fun loving’ approach to master a complex list of dives from the 10m platform.

“Early days, but I know he is keen to compete again with the best in the world and pick up where he left off pre-covid”.

A relative newcomer to the sport of diving, Rousseau transition from acrobatic gymnastics in 2017 after coming to the realisation that recent growth was impacting his performance.

At first, he was reluctant to pursue the sport but after a testing period with his sister he fell in love with diving.

Now, Rousseau goes into the Tokyo Olympic Games with one goal. To have fun. It has been a mentality that he has maintained throughout his diving career from the moment he walked through the door of the Brisbane Aquatic Centre four years ago.

It sure has worked so far.

Watch Cassiel Rousseau compete at the Tokyo 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games in the Men’s 10-Metre Platform Preliminary Friday August 6, 2021.
