Meet the Team - Anabelle Smith

Published Mon 19 Jul 2021

Anabelle Smith is no stranger to Olympic success having secured a bronze medal at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games alongside synchro partner Maddison Keeney in the Women’s 3-Metre Synchro event.

Smith’s performance at the Rio Games completed her set of medals from every major international diving competition including the FINA World Championships, Commonwealth Games, and FINA Diving World Cup.

At the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games Smith will look to return to build upon that success, however this time as an individual in the Women’s 3-Metre Springboard event.

“Being unable to defend her Olympic medal in the Women’s 3-Metre Synchro event due to the Pandemic was a big blow for Anabelle, however she moved on quickly and refocussed on qualifying for her first Olympic individual 3-Metre event,” Banks said.

“Working hard both in the pool and with her support team, she continued to develop her dive consistency and her individual competition mindset and although the trial was always going to be a close-run thing, a great performance across the three lists of dives put her on the team.

“She is now once again focussed on doing everything she can to hone her skills and demonstrate to all what she can do individually at her third Olympics in Tokyo.”

Like many Australian athletes, Smith fell in love with sport and the Olympic Games after watching Cathy Freeman claim gold in the Women’s 400-Metre Final at the Sydney 2000 Olympic Games.

That love led to Smith pursuing a number of sports in her youth before starting diving in 2004 through her cousin who was diving at the time. From there she was quickly talent identified and asked to join a term program in Victoria.

Outside the pool Smith graduated with a Bachelor of Exercise and Sports Science from Australian Catholic University in 2017.

In the future she hopes to pass on her knowledge and experience from her career in diving to the next generation of champions in the health and wellbeing space.
