Major Athlete Award – Naming Competition

Published Sun 05 May 2019

Last year, at the Diving Australia Annual Awards, DA announced that it would be renaming its Major Athlete Award and that a competition would be held to determine the new name. It is time to now run that competition!

The Major Athlete Award is awarded to the athlete who has not only excelled in the pool, but has also displayed exemplary standards away from the pool. A best and fairest as you will, as opposed to our Male and Female Diver of the Year Awards which are calculated accordingly strictly to a performance formula.

The Competition will be run in 2 Stages.

The Shortlist

For the next 2 weeks, DA is asking you to put on your thinking hats to come up with a shortlist. Any and all ideas will be considered. It might the named after a famous Australian Diver, or maybe 2 divers, maybe named after a piece of equipment. Literally, during the shortlist phase, anything you can think of. You can send in your suggestions either by email to diving@diving.org.au or by commentating on our facebook, Instagram or twitter pages.

To finalise the Shortlist phase, the DA Board will choose, in its view, the best 4 ideas. And then we move to the second stage of the Competition!

The Vote

Once the Shortlist has been finalised, DA will run a poll via our social media channels and the most popular name will become the name of the Major DA Athlete Award. And in years to come, hopefully be only known as that!

The winning name will be unveiled, as well as this year’s recipient, at the DA Annual Awards evening to be held on Sunday 9 June in Adelaide (more details to follow).

To make it really interesting, there will be a pretty cool prize of 2 economy flights from your nearest Australian capital city to Adelaide, a nights accommodation in Adelaide and free tickets to the Annual Awards. If more than one person suggests the ultimate winning entry, the person who first suggested that entry will be announced as the winner!

For more information now (we will update the information following the Shortlist Stage), please contact Diving Australia and don’t forget to start your suggestions!

Good Luck!
