LAST CHANCE FOR AUSTRALIAN DIVERS TO CLAIM MISSING RIO SPOTS
Published Wed 17 Feb 2016
The Australian diving team will be looking to qualify the final positions for the 2016 Olympics when it contests the Diving World Cup in Rio this weekend.
Coach Chava Sobrino is confident the team has the experience to qualify the synchronised diving spots that have so far eluded the Australians.
“I think Australia for a few years has had a very strong team with really good, strong morale,” Sobrino said.
“This team in Rio has a great combination of different divers with different levels of experience.
“All the international competitors who are going to be in Rio will be there this weekend. We are looking forward to getting the chance to adapt to the venue and the outdoor conditions.
Australia has already qualified every available individual spot for Rio, plus the women’s 3-metre synchro team.
But it is still to qualify the men’s 3-metre synchro team, as well as the men’s and women’s platform synchro combinations.
To qualify a place in Rio in the synchro events teams must finish in the top seven at the World Cup.
The team has undergone some late changes, with the retirement of Beijing gold medallist Matthew Mitcham opening the door for US-based James Connor to team with Commonwealth Games gold medallist Domonic Bedggood in the men’s platform.
In the women’s platform, London Olympic silver medallist Brittany Broben will team with the experienced Melissa Wu, following the withdrawal of Teju Williamson and Taneka Kovchenko.
“We would have liked the opportunity to have more time to train together, but the girls are in good spirits and are ready,” Sobrino said of Wu and Broben.
“They are mentally ready, they are very competitive. It’s going to be the first time they compete internationally together.
“There are a lot of factors that play against them, but there are a lot of factors for them.”
Sobrino believes the pairing of Connor and Bedggood is a strong move and expects they will also give a strong showing.
The 3-metre synchro hopes will rest with Connor and Commonwealth Games silver medallist, Grant Nel.
This weekend’s event will take place at the Olympic venue, giving athletes a chance to experience the potentially tricky outdoor conditions.
The full Australian team for this weekend is;
Women’s 3m – Maddison Keeney, Esther Qin
Women’s 10m – Melissa Wu, Emily Meaney
Women’s 3m – Esther Qin and Samantha Mills
Women’s 10m Synchro– Melissa Wu and Brittany Broben
Men’s 3m – James Connor, Grant Nel
Men’s 10m – James Connor, Domonic Bedggood
Men’s 3m Synchro – Grant Nel and James Connor
Men’s 10m Synchro – Domonic Bedggood and James Connor
The World Cup and Rio test event begins on Friday and runs through until next Wednesday.
The Australian team for Rio will be finalised at the Australian selection trials in Melbourne in May.
