Keeney and Bedggood win gold in Mixed 3 Metre Springboard

Published Sun 11 Feb 2024

Maddison Keeney and Domonic Bedggood won Australia’s fifth medal of the World Aquatics Championships 2024 with a gold medal performance in the Mixed 3-Metre Springboard.

The Aussie pair scored a total of 300.93 points to edge out team Italy who finished with the silver, and team Korea who won bronze. The duo led the field from their second dive and secured victory with a margin of 13.44 points.

It was Keeney’s third medal of this meet adding to the silver medal she won in the Women’s 3-Metre Springboard and a bronze that she won as part of the Team’s Event. The silver she won with Anabelle Smith in the Women’s 3-Metre Springboard also earned Australia a quota position to the Paris Olympics.

“This will be a really insightful and successful championships for me and for everyone in my team. It’s still February but it’s really good to take the momentum right on,” Keeney said.

With this being the final diving event for the Aussies the duo wanted to end their competition on a high.

“Maddi and I have been doing this event for a long time so finally we had an opportunity to win the gold,” Bedggood said.

“I think the first time we did this was back in 2018, so we’re very experienced as a pair, but because we live in different cities and our focus on this World Championships were the Olympic qualifying events, we didn’t get an opportunity to train together until today.

“However we were able to use all those years of our experience to funnel it into the competition and I think the result kind of speaks of our ability to draw that experience and to do five good, solid dives. We’re very happy with the outcome but we know that we are a good enough team, so we know that on a good day we are up to it.

Bedggood and his diving partner Cassiel Rousseau also earned Australia a quota in the Men’s 10-Metre Synchronised with a sixth place finish in that event.

Australia finished #AquaDoha2024 with five medals in total with the Aussies also claiming gold on day one courtesy of Alysa Koloi in the Women’s 1-Metre Springboard. Shixn Li won a silver medal in the Men’s 1-Metre Springboard.
