KEENEY AND BEDGGOOD THE STANDOUT PERFORMER AT RIO DIVING TRIALS

Published Fri 27 May 2016

Commonwealth Games medallists Maddison Keeney and Domonic Bedggood have taken the first steps toward possible Olympic nomination with strong performances on day two of the Rio qualification event in Melbourne.

Keeney finished first in both the preliminary and semi-final rounds of the women’s springboard competition, while Bedggood was the standout performer in the men’s platform.

“I was a bit nervous in the preliminaries, but I felt okay in the semis,” Keeney, who won silver and bronze medals in Glasgow, said.

“I knew I just had to do what I had trained to do. There really was not much more I could change.

“I still think I have a way to go to improve on everything.”

Commonwealth Games gold medallist, Esther Qin, made a slow start to the competition, finishing sixth after the preliminary round behind Keeney and 2012 Olympian, Anabelle Smith.

But she performed stronger in the semi-finals to finish second, just over one point behind Keeney with Smith in fourth place.

Bedggood was solid in the platform, where he won gold diving alongside Beijing gold medallist Matthew Mitcham in the synchro at the Glasgow Commonwealth Games.

Adelaide teenager Ross Todd finished second in both the preliminary and semi-final rounds.

Australia has qualified two positions in each of the individual events for Rio.

The women’s platform and men’s springboard finals will be held on Saturday.
