Inaugural National Jump In Day a Success

Published Tue 07 Sep 2021

On Saturday September 4, Diving Australia held its first ever National Jump In Day.

National Jump In Day was held in six pools across the country to allow Australians to get on board and have a go at the sport of diving.

More than 250 Aussies took part in a fun filled day of celebration and excitement which came off the back of Australia’s recent success at the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games.

In Brisbane eight-year-old Kaylah Lam of Forest Lake tried diving for the first time at the event held at the Sleeman Sports Complex.

Although Lam had some reluctance at first, she quickly found the fun in diving.

“I felt scared but then when I jumped down and kept on going it was really exciting and I really liked it,” Lam said.

Lam in her first session jumped off the 5-metre platform and “really really wanted to” go even higher.

Also in his first time diving 11-year-old Riley Bremer of Oxley found a similar experience with jumping in.

“I was really scared but as soon as you leaped off it was so fun,” Bremer said.

To the question of if he would be coming back for another session, Bremer had one simple answer.

“Definitely.”

In Perth fresh off her Olympic debut in Tokyo, Nikita Hains met and spoke to participants in her home state sharing her experience of the Games and offering advice to the next generation of diving champions.

“I’m humbled by the warm welcome home I received. After the lack of spectators at the Games it was very special to be able to be face to face and spare my experiences,” Hains said.

“It was also so much fun getting amongst all the kids enjoying themselves and having a go. It’s exciting to see the potential of the new generation.”

Fellow Diving Australia National Squad members Georgia Sheehan, Dom Bedggood, Cassiel Rousseau and Maddison Keeney also made event appearances.

Although National Jump In Day has come and gone, now is the perfect time to find a local diving club near you and have a go.
