Local hope Domonic Bedggood and Australian teammate Matthew Barnard are both through to this weekend’s final of the men’s platform event after strong performances in trying conditions at the FINA Diving Grand Prix on the Gold Coast on Friday.

Bedggood, a gold medallist at the Glasgow Commonwealth Games alongside Matthew Mitcham in the men’s platform synchro, turned in a consistent performance in his home pool, finishing with 439.35 points to qualify second behind Chinese World Cup winner, Jian Yang, on 441.95.

Earlier 23-year-old Bedggood had scored 428.45 points to finish top of the leaderboard in the preliminary round in windy and wet conditions.

“With this kind of weather and conditions, it all ultimately comes down to who can mentally tough it out, and I think conditions like this really puts everyone on an even playing field,” Bedggood said.

“Myself and the Chinese diver who came first in my semi-final, Jian Yang, he’s a bronze medallist from the World Championships, we were pretty much toe-to-toe. It’s my home pool, so I can’t really say anything bad about it.

“It’s good to have family members and friends here cheering me on, it makes me want to perform better and showcase my skills and talents. It’s exciting to think in so many months’ time this will be the Commonwealth Games will be.

“It’s like a little sneak peek into what it’s going to be like. Hopefully then the sun will be out.”

Teammate Barnard finished on 369.05 in his semi-final to also qualify second, with Russian Olympian Nikita Shleikher finishing top of the list on 400.00 points.

The men’s platform final will be held on Sunday afternoon.

No Australians made the final of the women’s 3-metre, with Anabelle Smith and Alysha Koloi both finishing fourth in their semi-finals.

Chinese divers Xiaohui Huang (313.35) and Yiwen Chen (311.15) won both the semi-finals. Queensland’s Georgia Sheehan did not progress past the preliminary rounds.

Australia’s 2014 3-metre Commonwealth gold medallist Esther Qin and 2016 Olympian Maddison Keeney are concentrating on synchro events this Sunday, when the final of the women’s springboard will also be held.

Three-time Commonwealth Games athlete Melissa Wu will make her first appearance of the week on Saturday morning when she contests the women’s platform synchro with Adelaide’s Taneka Kovchenko, while there will also be finals in men’s 3-metre synchro and individual, women’s individual platform, and the platform mixed synchro.
