Australia’s AnnaRose Keating and Brittany O’Brien have both topped their semi-finals in the women’s platform event at the Gold Coast Diving Grand Prix to put them in good positions for medals this weekend.

And Olympic gold medallist Yuan Cao and current world champion Siyi Xie have set the scene for a gripping men’s 3-metre springboard final after the opening day of competition, the Chinese pair taking no time to find their form in the tricky outdoor conditions.

Teenager Keating upstaged two-time Olympic medallist and 2010 Commonwealth Games gold medallist, Pandelela Rinong, in her semi-final, the Victorian finishing with a score of 297.10 ahead of the Malaysian’s 295.20.

O’Brien, a member of last year’s Australian Olympic team, finished her semi-final with a score of 284.25, with Canada’s Celina Toth second on 267.45 and Germany’s Christina Wassen on 252.20.

Xie, the 3-metre and 1-metre springboard world champion from this year’s World Championships, was in devastating form in his semi-final.

He posted a final score of 486.15 to finish well ahead of Jamaican Olympian, Yona Knight-Wisdom, on 412.20, with Olympic bronze medallist Patrick Hausding from Germany third on 403.20.

Cao was an easy winner of the second semi-final, his score of 412.80 putting him well ahead of Canada’s Peter Mai on 375.00 and Malaysia’s Muhammad Syafiq Puteh on 363.10.

Australia’s only competitor in the 3-metres, Matthew Carter, did not progress to the 12-man semi-finals after finishing 13^th in the preliminary round.

Both the women’s 10-metre and men’s 3-metre finals will be held on Saturday afternoon.

Friday will see the men’s 10-metre and the women’s 3-metre preliminary and semi-finals.
