DOUBLE GOLD NIGHT FOR AUSTRALIA

Published Mon 08 Aug 2022

Cassiel Rousseau and Maddison Keeney have put forward performances for the ages to take gold in their respective events at the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games.

Cassiel Rousseau in his first Commonwealth Games shook off the nerves and the pressure of an all-English crowd to be take home the gold medal in the Men’s 10-Metre Platform event.

Australia has a rich history in the event at the Games including previous gold medallists Mathew Helm and Dom Bedggood in the past two decades.

However, Cassiel says there is still work to do to be considered in the pantheon of legendary Australian divers.

“I don’t want to say I am a part of that company,” Rousseau said.

“They are way above my level still and I still have a lot more room to grow and a lot more room to get better.

“I don’t think I’ve reached close to my potential just yet.”

The Queenslander claimed the only perfect 10 of the Commonwealth Games to date with an outstanding final round dive, a forward four-and-a-half.

The dive was awarded a total score of 103.90, more than enough to secure the gold medals

“There was a lot of pressure on that last dive and I think I handled it pretty well,” Rousseau said.

“I said to myself, ‘if I land on my stomach or if I do actually land on my head, I’m not going to care at all’. I’m going to give it my all and see what I actually have in store.

“Before I was about to run, there was absolutely nothing in my head and I just went for it.

“I did know straight away. As soon as I hit the water, I knew that I was going to get some bloody high marks.”

Maddi Keeney picked up her second gold medal of the Games, this time in the Women’s 3-Metre Springboard event.

It was a display of composure and experience for Keeney, the result of years of tireless work.

“I’ve just been through a lot,” Keeney said.

“I haven’t been able to train as much as I’d like to, and I haven’t been able to dive as well as I have been in the past.

“It’s been really hard work behind the scenes so it just feels good to get across the line.”
