WU RETURNS TO THE SCENE OF OLYMPIC MEDAL
Olympic silver medallist Melissa Wu will this weekend return to the pool where she won her thrilling medal, to compete at the opening event of the Diving World Series.
Joining Wu in Beijing will be Commonwealth Games gold medallists Esther Qin and Domonic Bedggood, as part of a six-strong Australian diving team.
The experienced team also includes Commonwealth Games medallists Maddison Keeney, Grant Nel and Anabelle Smith.
All six divers are expected to figure prominently at the Australian Olympic selection trials in May, when the final team for Rio will be selected.
Wu won silver as a 16-year-old diving alongside Briony Cole in the women’s platform synchro, and goes to this weekend’s event in some of the best form of her career.
She finished third behind Chinese divers Qian Ren and Yajie Si at the recent World Cup event in Rio
Qin, who won gold in the 3-metre springboard at Glasgow in 2014, will restrict her competition in Bejing to the individual event, with regular 3-metre synchro partner, Samantha Mills, not making the trip.
Bedggood will compete in the 10-metre individual and will also team up with Wu to compete in the mixed synchro.
Perth’s Maddison Keeney has the busiest program of the weekend, competing in the 3-metre individual, the 3-metre synchro with Anabelle Smith, and the 3-metre mixed synchro with Grant Nel.
The Beijing World Series will take place in the famous Water Cube, and runs from Friday until Sunday.
