Diving Australia Welcomes Commonwealth Games Australia Funding Boost

Published Wed 03 Apr 2019

Commonwealth Games Australia this week announced a $13 million funding package to support athletes and teams ahead of the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games.

The funding announcement falls one-year after the Opening Ceremony of the Gold Coast Games which saw Australian divers take home 11 medals including three gold from Domonic Bedggood, Melissa Wu, and the synchro team of Esther Qin and Georgia Sheehan.

Diving Australia CEO David Bell says the package will bring a welcomed boost to preparations ahead of the 2022 Games.

“This funding will help our younger athletes compete internationally and allow us to include more of those younger athletes in our national camps,” Bell said.

“This will be of fantastic preparation for those athletes as they look toward Birmingham 2022 and beyond. On behalf of the sport of Diving, we sincerely thank CGA for its ongoing and generous support”

This latest funding package comes after decades of support from Commonwealth Games Australia which has seen more than $43 million passed to its member and athletes.

Australian Divers have a proud history of Commonwealth Games success having won gold medals at every edition since 1982.

Australian Commonwealth Games Champions include greats such as Jenny Donnet, Valerie Beddoe, Shaun Panayi, and Michael Murphy.

The support from Commonwealth Games Australia will no doubt contribute to the continued success of Australian Athletes at the Games.
