Diving Australia is pleased to announce a 16-member team to represent Australia at the Canada leg of the 2022 FINA Diving Grand Prix more commonly known as Canada Cup.
The team heading to Calgary, led by Olympic medallists Maddison Keeney, Melissa Wu, and Anabelle Smith, boasts an impressive 14 Olympic appearances between them.
Joining Keeney, Wu, and Smith is fellow Olympians Brittany O’Brien, Nikita Hains, Cassiel Rousseau, Dom Bedggood, Sam Fricker, and Shixin Li.
14-year-old Victorian Charli Petrov will make her international debut for Australia with Georgia Sheehan, Alysha Koloi, Kate Rosman, Emily Boyd, Emily Meaney, and Laura Hingston rounding out the team.
Diving Australia General Manager High Performance and Pathways Steve Foley said the event offers Australian divers the opportunity to return to international competition ahead of the 2022 FINA World Championships and Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games.
“With the exception of the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games, it has been a more than 24 months since an Australian Diving Team has left our shores,” Foley said.
“With our focus, and the focus of our divers, set on this year’s World Championships in Budapest and Birmingham Commonwealth Games, Canada Cup is an excellent chance to test ourselves against the rest of the world.
“We know that every year at Canada Cup dozens of top-notch divers take to the boards especially those from Commonwealth countries including Canada and Great Britain, for our divers it will give them a nice test run for what they can expect in July and August in Birmingham.
“It will be a special milestone for our international debutant Charli Petrov who will be flanked by a group of established platform divers at she represents Australia for the very first time.
“We thank Diving Plongeon Canada for hosting this event, and we wish the organisers and every athlete the very best of luck.”
The athletes will be joined by a coaching staff of Mathew Helm, Andy Banks, Ady Hinchliffe, and Vyninka Arlow with Michael Hetherington, David Spurrier and Jodie Gillam serving as support staff.
Canada Cup is slated for June 9-12, 2022, at Calgary’s Repsol Sport Centre.
