Countdown to #Glasgow2014 - Team Arrival

Published Tue 22 Jul 2014

After a thrilling week in Shanghai for the Fina World Cup, the Australian Diving Team has arrived in Glasgow for the Commonwealth Games.

The team will be 11-strong with the 7 divers that competed in the World Cup linking up with Matthew Mitcham, Anna Gelai, Georgia Sheehan and Domonic Bedggood in Glasgow.

Unfortunately, Emily Boyd was not able to take her place in the team after suffering an injury that reduced her ability to train in the weeks leading up to the Games. As a 10m Platform Diver, safety is the number one priority and the lack of training has meant that she has not had sufficient time to ensure she can perform her dives safely, and to her ability. No replacement will be added to the team.

The Team will stay just the one night in the Official Games Village in Glasgow before moving into the Diving satellite Village in Edinburgh. Diving is one of a small number of sports being held outside of Glasgow and the only sport being held in Edinburgh.

The Opening Ceremony is being held on 23 July and the Diving kicks off on 30 July with Men's 1m, Women’s 3m Synchro and Women’s 10m Synchro. The Men’s 1m may feature Matthew Mitcham and Grant Nel. The Women’s 3m Synchro will be a high quality event featuring World Cup Bronze Medallists Anabelle Smith and Maddison Keeney as well as Esther Qin and Anna Gelai. The favourites for the event will be the Canadian pair of Jennifer Abel and Pamela Ware who edged out the Australian for the Silver Medal in Shanghai.

The Women’s 10m Synchro will also be a great event featuring Melissa Wu and Rachel Bugg who narrowly finished 4th at the World Cup behind the Malaysian pair in second and the Canadian pair in third. Wu and Bugg will be hoping to topple these two pairs and claim the Gold.

Network 10 will cover the Games live.  Information regarding the Diving event can be found by clicking here.
