Countdown to #Glasgow2014 - Melissa Wu
Published Wed 30 Jul 2014
Our countdown concludes today as we take a look at our final athlete, the mighty Melissa Wu!
Melissa Wu seems like she’s been on the diving scene for a very long time, and even though she’s just 22 she is one of Australia’s most experienced divers.
She was just 14 when she competed for Australia at the 2006 Melbourne Commonwealth Games, where she won a silver medal in the 10-metre synchro and finished 5th in the individual platform.
Two years later Melissa won her first Olympic medal, again in the platform synchro, making her the youngest Australian to ever win an Olympic diving medal.
In 2010 Melissa broke through for a Commonwealth Games gold medal in Delhi, in the platform synchro, and also picked up a silver in the individual platform.
In London in 2012 she finished fourth in the platform final.
This will be Melissa’s third Commonwealth Games, where she will once again compete in the individual platform and the platform synchro.
Melissa spent most of 2013 on the sidelines battling a back injury, but showed in trials late last year and in winning a FINA Grand Prix in Puerto Rico that she is in the best form of her career.
The Wu family have strong sporting pedigree, with Melissa’s younger brother, Josh, and sister Madeline both outstanding weightlifters.
She can also boast World Champion hurdler Jana Pittman and rugby International James Stannard as cousins.
