Countdown to #Glasgow2014 - Matthew Mitcham
Published Tue 29 Jul 2014
The countdown continues and today we look at Matthew Mitcham!
Matthew Mitcham openly admits he considered quitting diving after the 2012 London Olympics, but in the end his disappointment at not winning gold at the Delhi Commonwealth Games in 2010 was a sufficient magnet to draw him back in.
Matthew stormed into the record books and Australian folklore at the 2008 Beijing Olympics when he posted the biggest individual dive score in Olympic history (112.10, including four perfect 10's) on his way to a platform gold medal. He was also the first Australian male in more than 80 years to win an Olympic diving gold medal.
But he has never won Commonwealth gold. In 2006, the then 18-year-old did not win a medal in Melbourne, and four years later in India he finished with a frustrating four silver medals.
Matthew was an outstanding trampolinist as a junior, representing Australia in several International events. It was where he was spotted by Diving Australia coaches and enticed to the pool.
In Glasgow Matthew will compete in the 10-metre and 1-metre individual events, and the 10-metre synchro (with Domonic Bedggood) and the 3-metre synchro (with Grant Nel).
Away from the pool 26-year-old Matthew has developed a critically acclaimed cabaret show focusing on his life, in which he sings and plays the ukelele. He has performed to sell-out audiences in most Australian capital cities.
