Countdown to #Glasgow2014 - Esther Qin
Published Wed 16 Jul 2014
We continue our Countdown to Glasgow and today take a look at springboard specialist Esther Qin!
Like many divers, Chinese-born Esther Qin owes her career in the sport to a fairly unusual beginning. Her parents enrolled her in a sports school, but how she ended up diving is a surprise. Because she was scared of water! After considerable coaxing from her teacher, at age 11 she finally decided to have a go, and one year later she was winning competitions.
In 2006 Esther injured an ankle and took a year off from the sport. During that time her parents moved to Sydney, gifting Australia a brilliant diver.
Esther has developed into one of Australia’s leading springboard divers, and will compete in the 1-metre, 3-metre and 3-metre synchro with South Australia’s Anna Gelai in Glasgow.
Qin and Gelai have enjoyed good results this year, winning bronze in a FINA Grand Prix in Mexico and silver in a FINA Grand Prix in Puerto Rico.
Before she gets to Glasgow, she will competing in the 3 metre individual at the FINA World Cup against the World's best!
