Countdown to #Glasgow2014 - Anna Gelai
Published Fri 18 Jul 2014
As we continue our Countdown to Glasgow, today take a look at South Australia's Anna Gelai!
Anna Gelai began diving when she was eight years old, after her parents spotted a flyer advertising a “Come Try and Dive” day near her primary school.
She fell in love immediately, found a Russian-born coach and began training at the age of 10. She excelled as a junior, and then three years ago moved to Adelaide to join the SASI program.
Anna is studying psychology and trying to learn Spanish, but her big goal is a medal in the 3-metre synchro (with Esther Qin) and to compete at the Rio Olympics.
Her synchro form this year has been very encouraging, winning a silver and a bronze medal at FINA Grand Prix events in Puerto Rico and Mexico.
Her career highlight before this year was a silver medal at the FINA Junior World Championships in Arizona in 2010.
Anna turned 21 just before the team departed for Glasgow, but she put off her celebrations until after she makes her Commonwealth Games debut.
