CONNOR PUTS IN SOLID PERFORMANCE IN MEN’S 3-METRE FINAL

Australian diver James Connor has finished ninth in the final of the men’s springboard at the FINA World Aquatics Championships in Budapest, Hungary.

And in further good news for Australia, 1-metre world champion Maddison Keeney and her Olympic synchro bronze medal partner, Anabelle Smith, have both qualified for the individual final of the women’s 3-metre springboard.

Connor, a two-time Australian Olympian, started slowly in the final, sitting 12th after his first three dives.

But a strong finish saw him jump to ninth on the standings with 453.80 points, behind Chinese gold medallist Siyi Xie on 547.10 points.

Keeney and Smith both held their nerve during the preliminary and semi-final rounds of the 3-metre and have qualified in strong positions for Friday’s final.

Keeney qualified in fifth position, while Smith will go into the final in ninth place.

Significantly, seven of the 12 divers in the 3-metre final are Commonwealth athletes, including Canadian pair Pamela Ware and Jennifer Abel, and Great Britain’s Grace Reid.
