Commonwealth Games Day 4

Published Sat 14 Apr 2018

The Australian Diving Team had a fantastic 4th and final day at the 2018 Commonwealth Games.
With the Men's 10m and Women's 3m events to finish the program, Australia had 6 athletes competing.

In the Women's 3m prelims, Esther Qin dived well to qualify in first pace for the evening final. Maddi Keeney overcame a restart on her reverse 2 and a half to qualify in 6th and Anabelle Smith qualified in 8th.

In the Men's 10m prelims, Declan Stacey looked strong for 3rd into the final With Domonic Bedggood just behind in 4th and Matthew Barnard in 11th. The top 12 moving into the final.

Back in, again, perfect conditions for the start of the final evening session for #GC2018 and the Women's 3m was an amazing competition with truly world class diving on show. Defending Champion Esther Qin slightly missed her 3rd dive, back 2 and a half, but she finished well for 5th place.

Anabelle Smith came back so strongly from an underwhelming prelim and was exceptional to claim the Bronze with an excellent score of 336.90. But Maddison Keeney and Jennifer Abel had the most mesmerising battle for the Gold. Maddi's final dive, the huge 5154B was magnificent and scored a huge 85 points. This put the pressure right back on Abel who need to score well to keep in front. It was so close but Abel was good enough to sneak back into the front and claim the Gold. Winning by just 0.4 points!

The final event of the program was the Men's 10m and without current World Champion Tom Daley in the event (out injured) it was wide open.

Domonic Begged started incredibly well and after 3 dives was clearly in front. Matthew Dixon from England was keeping in touch. On to the final round and it was nearly neck and neck with Dixon ahead by just 1.4 points.

Domonic's final dive was good - and ultimately good enough as it was marginally better than Dixon's - Bedggood claiming the Gold with 451.15 points. Just 1.6 in front!

Declan finished in 7th and Matthew Barnard in 10th.

Amazing diving from our Australian Diving Team on day 4, picking up a medal of each colour across the 2 events.

What a great Commonwealth Games for Australia!
