Commonwealth Games Day 1

What.A.Day.

Things kicked off with the Men's 1m Prelims and Australia qualified all three divers into the final with James and Matt in the middle of the finalists and Kurtis sneaking in to the final in 12th. Jack Laugher looked sharp and the man to beat for the final.
Then the AM session turned to one of the most amazing comps seen in diving for a long time. The Women's 3m Synchro was an amazing event - the lead changed, the likely finishing order changed, with every single dive until Esther and Georgia nailed the final dive to lay down a marker to the teams to come. It was enough - and the Gold was theirs!🥇🥇

Unfortunately for Maddi and Anabelle they were not able to complete their final dive and finished out of the medals.

The night session saw the men's 1m final and the boys were on! Kurtis dived amazingly and turned it hugely around from the morning session, improving his score by over 100 points! He finished 9th in a high quality comp. Matt looked fantastic but a costly miss on his 107 meant he finished 8th.

James dived incredibly well, breaking the 400 point barrier with ease and was the clear Silver medal winner behind a dominant Jack Laugher. Shoutout to James Heatly winning the first Scottish medal since 1958 (his Grandad!) and also Yona Knight-Wisdom (4th). Both James and Yona had been training alongside Diving Australia programs in the lead up to the Games.

Up next was the Women's 10m Synchro and the atmosphere was electric. Melissa Wu and her 3 day old Synchro partnership with Teju Williamson looked like seasoned veterans laying down great dive after great dive. Unfortunately it was not to be for a podium finish as they were pipped by the smallest of margins - 0.36 points - for the Bronze. The Malaysian teams taking out Gold and Bronze and the Canadians the silver.

Congratulations to all divers on a fantastic first day of #CG2018Diving action!
