COMMONWEALTH GAMES AND OLYMPIC STARS IN THE SPOTLIGHT AS AUSTRALIAN OPEN CHAMPIONSHIPS GETS UNDERWAY IN PERTH

Australia’s Commonwealth Games and Olympic diving stars have sprung into the spotlight on the first two days of competition at the Australian Open Championships in Perth.

The Australian Open Championships also doubles as the selection trials for the 2023 World Championships team that will travel to the World Aquatics Championships in Fukuoka, Japan at the end of July.

Day one of the competition saw the Commonwealth Games bronze medal pairing of Cassiel Rousseau and Domonic Bedggood defend their national title.

The young New South Wales team of Ruby Drogemuller and Ellie Cole also put themselves in a very good position for selection to the national team, taking out the Women’s Platform Synchro Final.

The Synchro teams returned to the diving tower on day two with the Men’s and Women’s 3-Metre Synchro Prelims and Finals, as well as the Women’s 1-Metre.

After finishing second in Prelims, the new pairing of Brittany O’Brien (NSW) and Georgia Sheehan (QLD) came from behind to win the Women’s 3-Metre Synchro Final.

It was Sheehan’s second gold medal of the meet, after she won the Women’s 1-Metre Final on Wednesday, her first individual gold medal at the national championships.

In the Men’s 3-Metre Synchro Final, the Commonwealth Games pairing of Sam Fricker (NSW) and Shixin Li (SA) took out top spot with a score of 763.89.

Former world champion and South Australian diver Li also won the Men’s 1-Metre Final, with a massive score 802.90, ahead of Vladimir Ruenko (NSW) in second on 666.55 and Hudson Skinner (VIC) with 622.20 in third.

The action will return to HBF Stadium for day three of the competition, with the Men’s 3-Metre Prelims and Semi Finals, as well as the Women’s Platform Prelims and Semi Finals set to be contested.
