Coaching Staff for Tokyo 2020

Published Wed 07 Jul 2021

Diving Australia is pleased to announce a four-member coaching staff for the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games.

Andy Banks (Co-National Coach, Adelaide), Adrian Hinchliffe (National Coach, Brisbane), Richard Schavone (Co-National Coach, Adelaide), and Chava Sobrino (National Coach, Sydney) will coach the seven strong diving team in Tokyo.

Between them, the staff has coached at a staggering sixteen Olympic Games.

Serving as Team Leader for the delegation will be Diving Australia General Manager, High Performance and Pathways Steve Foley.

Foley will lean on his extensive Olympic experience including three appearances as an athlete himself in 1976, 1980, and 1984. Foley has been involved with every Olympic Games since 1976 either as an athlete, coach, broadcaster, or as a member of team management.

The Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games will mark Foley’s twelfth Olympic appearance.

“This coaching staff is well prepared to lead our athletes to their personal success at these Games,” Foley said.

“They each bring with them unique perspectives from years of experience not only on the pool deck but at major multi-sport events like the Olympic Games.

“That experience will prove invaluable to our divers in Tokyo.

“I would also like to thank and congratulate Tommo Rickards on his fantastic work in preparing Sam Fricker for his Olympic debut. Tommo has developed in leaps and bounds as a coach and that has been reflected in the success of his athletes.

“Personally, I am very much looking forward to getting over to Tokyo and showing the rest of the world just how great our Australian divers continue to be.”

Diving begins at the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games on Friday July 30. To stay up to date on the latest following Diving Australia on Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter.
