Cassiel Rousseau Through To Semi-final In Platform Diving

Published Sat 07 Aug 2021

After six rounds of diving, and three long hours at the Tokyo Aquatic Centre, Olympic debutant Cassiel Rousseau has secured his ticket through to the semi-final of the Men's 10m Platform.

What's more remarkable, Rousseau only started diving in 2017 after a long career as an acrobatic gymnast.

But with his happy-go-lucky attitude and go-with-the-flow approach to his diving, Rousseau looked comfortably at home 10 meters above the pool at the Olympic Games.

Rousseau's list was highlighted by his fourth-round dive, a reverse three-and-a-half, which pulled scores of eights from the panel of seven judges and his final dive, a front four-and-a-half, the highest scoring of his six.

The 20-year-old had a final six dive score of 423.55 enough for an 8th place finish, comfortably within the 18-person cut for the semi-final.

Rousseau puts his composure down to years of performing in his previous sport.

"I don't really get nervous during comps," Rousseau said.

"It's something that I've learnt over performing with sports acrobatics."

"Being on the international stage a lot of times and going into a bit of circus work performing in front of a lot of people, definitely helped."

As he dives into the semi-final, Rousseau has one plan in mind. To take "one dive at a time."

Rousseau was joined by fellow Australian Sam Fricker also in his first Olympic Games.

However, Fricker was unable to find the form he displayed at the recent Australian Open Championships having to settle for 28th place and a score of 306.50 missing out on a berth to the semi-final.

Rousseau will compete in the semi-final of the Men's 10m Platform on Saturday at 11:00am AEST with the top 12 divers progressing to the final at 4:00pm AEST.
