Published Sat 10 Aug 2024

An incredibly tight competition in the Men’s 10m Platform final has seen Cassiel Rousseau finish in fourth place.

Cassiel, the 2023 World Champion and the first Australian male to achieve the feat, scored 481.00 in the last event of the diving competition.

It was a memorable final for competitors and spectators alike, with several changes on the ranking board throughout the six rounds of dives ensuring that the medals were up for contention until the very end.

Opening strong with a tuck reverse 3½ somersault, he set his intentions on diving to the best of his capabilities, scoring 86.70 and standing in third at the end of the round.

However, his competitors rose to the challenge, putting forth their own high scoring dives in a race that kept that competition in a close finish until the final two rounds.

His second to last dive pushed Cassiel from sixth up into fifth position with a score of 82.50, as the competition drew closer ahead of the final round.

It was Cassiel’s final round dive, a tuck forward 4½ somersault and the most difficult of his repertoire, that earned him a score of 92.50, seeing him climb the ranks to lock in fourth.

Despite only just missing out on the podium, Cassiel noted that he was “incredibly happy” with his performance in the final, one which was an improvement on his eighth-place finish at Tokyo 2020.

“I honestly wasn’t expecting myself to be top six so I’m extremely happy with my performance,” Cassiel said.

“In terms of pressure, the Olympics is the biggest competition for athletes, and it is what it is, but at the moment I’m extremely happy with how I performed.

“To come out and do my best this year, and I think those were personal bests this year, I’m just incredibly happy to have put that out there.”

He also extended his congratulations to his fellow athletes, complimentary of those that took on the fight for podium positions until the very end.

“Both Noah (Williams) and Rikuto (Tamai) are very deserving of second and third, so seeing them place, I feel very happy for them both,” he enthused.

Yuan Cao of China took home the gold with a final score of 547.50, with Rikuto Tamai (JPN) claiming silver on 507.65 and Noah Williams (GBR) bronze with 497.35.

In an extraordinary feat, China swept the diving competition at Paris 2024, winning gold across all eight events of springboard and platform, while also picking up two silvers and a bronze medal.

“Props to them, it’s such an incredible feat to win all the events in diving in the Olympics, they obviously deserve it, and they work extremely hard,” Cassiel said.
