Brittany Broben announces retirement

Published Sun 02 Oct 2016

Brittany Broben has today announced her retirement from the sport of diving.

Brittany took up diving in 2007, training with Jinlan Wang as part of the Brisbane National Talent Identification program, and she quickly made her mark and only a few short years later was competing a full open list and representing Australia at various international events.

A multiple Australian Champion in various diving events, one of her proudest moments was breaking 400 points in winning the USA Grand Prix Event in 2011 at the iconic Fort Lauderdale pool. But, it is no surprise that winning her Olympic Silver Medal as a 16 year old, and youngest member of the entire Australian Olympic Team, is her most cherished memory.

“I will always be so proud of the fact that I am an Olympic Silver Medallist, and whilst I did not quite get to Rio, being selected in the team (Broben elected to withdraw due to injury) made me feel like a dual Olympian. After the challenges I had had since 2013, just getting to a place where I was diving well enough to be selected for Rio, was something I will always be proud of – but I really wanted to dive at my best in Rio and sadly that was not ultimately possible”.

Brittany is currently recovering from shoulder surgery and Diving Australia will continue to support her during that rehabilitation. Diving Australia CEO David Bell said “Brittany has been just an amazing ambassador for our sport and we are so proud to have had her as one of our premier athletes for the better part of the last 10 years! On behalf of the Australian diving community, we wish her every success in the future and hope to play a small part in helping her achieve her next successes”.

Brittany would like to thank the Australian Institute of Sport and the Queensland Academy of Sport both of which she was formerly a scholarship holder and also the New South Wales Institute of Sport where she is currently a scholarship holder. “I started my diving with Jinlan and then Xiangning Chen and I am indebted to them for all their support and encouragement. After moving to Sydney to work with Chava Sobrino late last year, I also want to thank him wholeheartedly for helping to reignite my passion for diving”.

Brittany has also mentioned she might not be finished with elite sport or indeed might consider coaching diving. Diving Australia will be watching with great interest!
