Diving Australia welcomes the decision by the International Olympic Committee to engage in targeted dialogue with the city of Brisbane who has become the preferred host of the 2032 Summer Olympic Games.

Although plenty of work is still to be taken, the step looks to build upon the region’s historic sporting legacy and add to the exciting sporting future.

National Squad Member and Olympic Medallist Anabelle Smith says the event has the potential to inspire the next generation of diving champions.

“As an athlete, the prospect of a home Olympic Games is extremely exciting,” Smith said, “For the next generation of divers, the chance of a home Games will no doubt bring a welcomed boost of energy, motivation and drive.

“From my own experience at a major sporting event at home, nothing beats that feeling of diving and competing in front of a home crowd. It is one of my most cherished memories and a once-in-a-career experience that I will never forget.

“We can already see the potential that Australia’s future diving champions have, and that future is certainly bright. If the opportunity arises to have their families and friends cheer them on in their home country at an Olympic Games, that will be career defining.”

Diving Australia National Coach – Brisbane Ady Hinchliffe says a home Olympic Games could serve as a significant boost for the diving in Australia.

“The IOC announcement is a significant boost for the future of the Olympic movement in Australia.” Hinchliffe said, “It is a huge endorsement of Australian sport at home and our commitment to international sporting success abroad.

“The potential of a home Olympic Games in 2032 will not only bring about a major interest and investment in Australian sport, but also assist in inspiring our current athlete’s and future champions alike.

“Brisbane is an ideal Olympic Host city for 2032. With the recent success of the 2018 Commonwealth Games on the Gold Coast, the region is uniquely equipped to support a major multi-sport event.

Diving in Australia is going from strength to strength, the announcement by the IOC last week only looks to make that future even brighter.”
