MILLS UPSTAGES MORE FANCIED RIVALS IN ADELAIDE

South Australian diver Samantha Mills has caused a major upset at the Australian Open diving championships, upstaging her more fancied rivals to win the 3-metre springboard final.

All eyes were on the four big names in Australian springboard diving – Commonwealth Games gold medalist Esther Qin, Olympian Anabelle Smith, World Junior Champion Georgia Sheehan, and two-time Commonwealth Games medalist, Maddison Keeney.

But Mills, who won gold at the last University Games, held her nerve in front of her home crowd while her opponents faltered.

22-year-old Mills finished with 346.55 points, ahead of Qin on 339.60 and Keeney on 334.85.

Smith finished fourth and Sheehan fifth.

Commonwealth Games synchro gold medalist Domonic Bedggood won gold in the men’s platform final, and in doing so thwarted the attempt by Victorian James Connor to win a hat-trick of titles over the weekend.

Bedggood, who won gold with Matthew Mitcham in the platform synchro at Edinburgh, finished today with 426.20 points, ahead of Connor on 408.35.

Connor had already won the 1-metre and 3-metre springboard titles in Adelaide this weekend.

But the 19-year-old was able to pick up a third title, teaming up with fellow Victorian and Commonwealth Games medalist Grant Nel to win the 3-metre synchro final.

AnnaRose Keating and Bridget Lord-Henry won the women’s platform synchro.
