RED LETTER DAY FOR CONNOR IN ADELAIDE
London Olympian James Connor showed he is close to his best with an outstanding display of diving on the second day of the Australian Open Championships in Adelaide.
Connor showed the benefit of a stint diving for Indiana in the US College system by winning men’s 1-metre final and qualifying first in the men’s platform semi-finals.
The 19-year-old spent the months leading up to this weekend’s Open competing in the US, a preparation which helped him score 395.05 in the 1-metre, and a massive 446.05 in the platform.
Commonwealth Games synchro gold medalist, Domonic Bedggood, qualified second with a score of 383.50.
In the springboard final WA’s Joshua Ong won silver and home crowd favourite, Matthew Carter, bronze.
The scene is set for a thrilling final in the women’s 3-metre on Sunday, following an intense day of preliminaries.
Maddison Keeney posted the highest score in the preliminary round, ahead of Georgia Sheehan, Anabelle Smith and Esther Qin.
But there was a reshuffle in the semi-final, with Olympian Smith finishing first, ahead of Sheehan, Qin and Keeney.
