Australian Open Championships - Day 1

Published Thu 11 Dec 2014

Perth teenager Maddison Keeney has put the disappointment of this year's Commonwealth Games behind her to win the 1-metre title on the opening day of the Australian Open Championships in Adelaide.

18-year-old Keeney beat a star-studded field, which included Glasgow 3-metre gold medalist Esther Qin, with a score of 298.55.

Qin finished second with 284.15 points, with another star of the future, 15-year-old Georgia Sheehan, finishing third with 265.40.

It mirrored the result from this year's Commonwealth Games, when Keeney, Qin and Sheehan finished second, third and fourth respectively behind Canada's Jennifer Abel.

Keeney looked almost a certainty to win gold at the Edinburgh Pool, before a baulk on her second last dive slipped her back to the silver medal.

In other results today, London Olympian James Connor was in outstanding form, posting 409.90 to qualify first in the men's 3-metres semi-final, while NSW's Brittany O'Brien continued her good form from this year's World Junior Championships, finishing top of the field in the platform semis with a score of 309.

The battle between Esther Qin and Maddison Keeney in the women's 3-metre event on Sunday will be one of the highlights of the Australian Open Championships.

Qin won gold in the 3-metre in Edinburgh, with Keeney finishing fourth.

Added to the mix on Sunday will be London Olympian and former national champion, Anabelle Smith.

The Australian Open Diving Championships continue tomorrow at the South Australia Sports and Leisure Centre.
